Remember how long years ago, you tore us from our land
And packed us tight in cargo ships, in chains and iron bands
We slaved away in cotton fields, and too, of sugar cane,
You took the skin from off our backs, in your mad quest for
gain
There was a time, a good man said, ‘All men are equal here’
But nothings changed, we still get blamed. still live our life
in fear,
And often when the country called, agreed to your demands
To fight beside you in your ranks, and die in foreign lands.
How odd my question seems to be, what answer can you give,
My people die beside you, but beside you cannot live,
How often must our young men die, where men are classed as
free
Shot down by those who should protect, where is your liberty
Did you hear Martin Luther King, when he said ‘He had a
dream’
And said that we might live as one, in love and peace serene,
But like the Saviour long ago, who we were taught to love
You killed our hopes, when you killed him, as sure as Gods
above.
